Care details

This tree should only be grown in full sunlight. It is very adaptable to both dry and moist locations, and should do just fine under average home landscape conditions. It is not particular as to soil type or pH, and is able to handle environmental salt. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments.

Leaf/needle description

The leaves are pinnately compound on older trees but bipinnately compound on vigorous young trees. The leaflets are bright green, turning yellow in the fall.

Fruit, cone, nut, and seed descriptions

Flowers not ornamental. The original tree did not have a history of producing seed pods, but recently both it and some plants now in cultivation have set light to heavy crops of seed pods. Honeylocust can switch from producing primarily male to female flowers, or both on the same plant.
