The Star Magnolia is a small, compact ornamental tree grown predominantly for its early spring flowers which are fragrant.  This is a perfect tree to be planted near a patio, entryway, under power lines, or in a shrub border.

Care details

Since the Star Magnolia blooms so early, it is susceptible to damage by late frosts so it is best planted in a sheltered location.  It prefers moist, well drained soil.  Avoid pruning before spring flowering. 

Leaf description

Alternate elliptical leaves, 2 to 4″ long. They are much denser and smaller than other Magnolias. Leaves are a yellow-brown fall color.

Flower description

Star Magnolia have 10 petal white flowers that open earlier in spring than any other Magnolia.  Flowers have a pleasant aroma. Magnolia begin blooming at a young age.
