Royal Frost Birch
Betula x ‘Royal Frost’
Tree Overview:
This birch has the best from both of its parents. From ‘Whitespire’ it inherited beautiful white bark and resistance to the bronze birch borer. From ‘Crimson Frost’ comes burgundy-red foliage. The combination of two colors makes this an outstanding specimen tree.
Height: 40 ft
Width: 25 ft
Fall Color: Yellow-Orange to Reddish
Care details
Best grown in moist, acidic, sandy or rocky, well-drained loams in full sun to part shade. Best foliage color occurs in full sun, but plants appreciate some afternoon part shade in hot summer areas. Water regularly but do not overwater. Requires consistently moist soil; do not let dry out between waterings.
Leaf/needle description
The pointy leaves are highly ornamental and turn an outstanding dark red in the fall.
Fruit, cone, nut, and seed descriptions
Tiny monoecious flowers appear in early spring (March-April) in separate catkins on the same tree. Greenish female flowers are followed by drooping cone-like fruits containing numerous small winged seeds that typically mature in late summer.
