Care details
Provide enriched, well-drained soil. Water deeply, regularly during first few growing seasons to establish an extensive root system; once established, reduce frequency. Feed before new spring growth appears. Thin heavy crops in early summer to prevent breakage or damage. Prune as needed to remove dead or damaged wood, or maintain smaller size. The best pruning time is winter, when dormant.
Leaf/needle description
Ovate leaves emerge purplish in spring, mature to dark green with reddish-tinged leaf veins and petioles in summer, and turn orangish in autumn.
Flower description
Pinkish-red buds open to slightly fragrant, deep pink-red flowers (1.5″ diameter) in spring. Flowers are followed by masses of small, purplish-red crabapples (to 1/2″ diameter) which mature in the fall.
