Bald Cypress
Taxodium distichum
Tree Overview:
The bald cypress tree is the classic tree of southern swamps. There, in its native habitat, it displays a peculiar habit of raising conical “knees” from its roots. The function of these growths is something of a mystery, although some believe it is a way to help the roots get oxygen. This tree dwells in swamps because it out-competes most other trees on such sites.

Care details
When you are planting a bald cypress tree, ensure that the soil has good drainage but also retains some moisture. Ideally, soil should be acidic, moist and sandy. Irrigate regularly. Do yourself a favor and don’t plant these trees in alkaline soil. Although bald cypress information may tell you that the tree has no serious insect or disease issues, it is likely to get chlorosisin alkaline soils.
Leaf description
Bald cypress has miniature needlelike leaves that attach to twiglets, which attach to the main twig in a spiraled fashion.
Fruit, cone, nut, and seed descriptions
Bald cypress has its dormant male catkins elongate in late winter or very early spring. Fruits (actually round cones) mature in one season, becoming prominent green balls that appear to be engraved with curving grooves on the cone surface. Triangular seeds are released from the brown cones in autumn and winter.
